Dojo News  Kata practice in July was a strange one. Only Bob and Barry showed. Matsuura was required to work, and I COMPLETELY FORGOT about it, due to the re-modeling of my kitchen, I had to completely prime it and paint it over the weekend for Monday's work on new flooring and cabinets to go in. All that's all I could think about, so it knocked kata right out of the brain (not hard).

Welcome back Craig Dieringer, we were afraid that the shoulder may be acting up again. Also welcome to the new kid on the block, Vaughn (see below).

Congratulations.....To Scott Melchi and his wife Sheril on the birth of their third child, a son, Samuel Christian Melchi. Born on July 9th at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, at 6:15 p.m. He was 6 lbs.,15 oz. Sheril and baby are both fine. Scott is back to practice already......(funny how those dads get back in shape so soon....)

Charles Ham's visit On Wednesday day July 3rd Charles came down from EMU to practice iaido with Nate, Shannon and I. He was hankering to do nothing but Muso Shinden Ryu kata, and that was just fine with us , as we are very inexperienced in those kata. I promised him a mat to cut, and damn if I didn't forget (pre-soak the mats) to do that  also. That was alright anyway, as it took us 2½ hours to do the Omori Ryu kata. Afterwards Charles and I skipped out to the Moonraker for baskets of deep fried smelt, my treat. Charles was headed up to Toronto this year to participate in the Guelph seminar put on by Kim Taylor.

Park Family visit  On Sunday July 14th I got a call from a youngster named Bo Kyung Park. He requested permission to visit and practice with us that evening. He mentioned his family was with him and they all wanted to practice with us. I asked him if they had experience, and he said "oh yes...." Hmmmm  well it turned out his Mom and Dad are both shodan and he is ikkyu (equivalent) at the Hong Moo Kwan Kumdo Dojang in Palisades Park New Jersey. It seems from their web site Mark Grivas sensei has helped their dojo get a foothold on the East coast. Grivas sensei has recently moved to Sag Harbor on Long Island to start a new dojo there.
We just really had a ordinary Sunday session with them included. We did our regular footwork drills, suburi drills etc. When we put on bogu, I noticed the high quality of their kiri-kaeshi. Very well done. From Left to right: Bo Kyung Park (13), Yoon Do Park (Dad), Min Jin Park (Mom). Mr. Park, it seems is combining a kumdo/summer vacation/business trip all-in-one. Very good spirit and enthusiasm during free-sparring also.
They brought with them a delicious after-practice beverage to share. It was a Aloe-based juice drink from Korea. It was very refreshing, even drinking it warm.

This photo is everyone at practice that night ( I'm the photographer) Notice the new little guy front left, that's Vaughn. I'll dig around for an old gi for him to wear.

GOLFER'S CORNER  " Winning golfers describe themselves as excited but calm. They know their adrenaline is pumping. They can feel the physical reaction, yet they have the discipline to stick with their mental and physical routine and execute their shots. "

Dr. Bob Rotello has numerous books on improving your golf game available. Check it out at Amazon.com
