Dojo News.  Those special second Saturday kata practices are being suspended until further notice due to lack of attendance. If you want to learn the kendo kata, you will have to ask a senior in the dojo to work with you before class begins.

Membership Drive.  The 2003 memberships are now available. $25.00 for the MWKF, and $40.00 for the AUSKF. All people with dan rank already must stay current with both organizations. All people who are considering testing in the next year might as well join now. You'll receive a shoulder patch from each organization, some insurance coverage, and lower fees to several events held in the Midwest and any AUSKF events around the nation. Matsuura, Mack, Ikenobu, and I always keep our memberships up to date, no matter what.......you should too.

Detroit Taikai   Originally billed as an event where the Miyazaki brothers ( Emperor Cup Champs) would make an appearance, this event lost its "top billed" to the current tide of anti-terrorist super-security situations. After all, they are security personnel, and with the current world situation, they were required to cancel any time-off, to stay in Japan to do their duty. As a club. we fielded a good team, only borrowing one person, Mr. Tyler Zimmerman from Minnehaha dojo, to fill out our 5 man team. We did our best, but we could not bring home a trophy from this taikai. Our dojo members who traveled there were Ikenobu, Matsuura, Mack, and Mills. I went to learn at the previous day's seminar, support the taikai, deliver the plaques, and to help with judging.
On Saturday a seminar was held at Birney Middle school gym in Southfield. Scheduled originally to showcase the Miyzaki's skills and share a little of their thoughts on training. But instead a letter of explanation and apology was read to us. Then we watched 2 of the 4 videos made available to us a few years back in English, that is the very basics of kendo, starting with wearing the uniform, etiquette, and basic striking methods.
Then we were split into 3 groups (by experience). Ebihara sensei (AEUSKF) took the beginners, Ariga sensei (ECUSKF) took the shodan/nidan people, Tagawa sensei (MWKF) handled the sandan and up. I was in the latter of course. Tagawa basically reviewed with us how to teach beginners to do footwork, suburi, kiri kaeshi and the basic waza of men, kote, doh, and tsuki. Trying to get all future instructors on a common page was the intent of this seminar.

At the end of the day we were allowed to free spar amongst our group. It was a completely filled gym of mad screaming kendoka, or so it may look to the uninitiated. Here is Kan sensei using a taiko to start and stop our 2 minute set with a partner.
