Detroit Tournament, Feb 17th: We had good participation, and great results at the 9th Annual Detroit Kendo Open, held on Sunday the 17th. Participating from Battle Creek was Travis, Stephen, Big Bob, Matsuura and Yoshida sensei. The big winner of the day was Stephen, who saw all his hard work over the past year bear fruit, he stomped his way into 1st place in the Individuals, the Mudansha division. Travis got all the way to the finals in Shodan and lost to a jodan player named Kim from  the SEUSKF. Youngster Chris Brooks from GR got to a court final in mudansha before losing. Yoshida was still feeling effects and jetlag from Japan but won three matches before falling. Matsuura sensei won four matches. Our team consisted of Matsuura, Stephen, Travis, Jordan (G.R.) and Yoshida. They ran all the way to the quarterfinals, really did well, and eliminated 2 very good teams in the meantime. The training will be starting soon for Cleveland.

Welcome new members:  Welcome to four new members who are from a fledgling dojo in South Bend, Indiana. They are mostly students at Indiana University at South Bend. You all know Julio Hernando, as he has been coming to our practice for way over a year now. Well, Julio is the faculty advisor to that group. They want to eventually join the MWKF as an official dojo. We are "officially" their mentor dojo. The idea is we help train them to do kendo consistent with the MWKF's idea of what kendo is, and make them brush shoulders often with other MWKF sensei, so they form friendships and contacts to help support their program in the future. Joe Spencer, Eddie KIm, Tuan Ngo and Tyler Glenn.  Our 2007 membership drive is concluded, and sucessful.

Dr. Deborah Klens-Bigman Seminar, March 3rd: Dr. Deborah Klens-Bigman of the New York Budokai traveled to our  dojo. She came with Peter Boylan from Detroit, and there were five people total at the practice. Mr. Jim Atkins from Northern Kentucky, Charles Ham from Ann Arbor, Scott Watson from Kalamazoo were the other. I was unable to practice due to the latest knee injury. She led drills from the Tachi Uchi No Kurai kenjutsu set from the Muso Shinden Ryu and Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu. on Saturday, While she was in Michigan, she practiced Tomiya ryu iaido with Alexanian sensei in Lansing also. Information on the New York Budokai can be seen here.

Hapki do Breakfast, March 17th: Bob and Scott helped out the club by giving a short demonstration of kendo at at fundraising breakfast for Master Hee Kwan Lee's Hapki do School. He is raising money to take 30 plus students to the 2008 World Hapki Do Championships in Korea. He was there in Korea for the 2006 Championships, and is convinced his students can do very well there. He also believes Battle Creek may be a great location to host the World Championships, here in the Kellogg arena. Maybe as soon as year 2010.

I've collected a lot of stories, quotes, koans, poems and haiku. Here is one I really like:

"Munen muso" No design, no mind, or no conception - this means the ability to act calmly and naturally even in the face of danger. It is the highest accord with existence, when a mans word and his actions are spontaneously the same.
